Kata Beach

Located on the west coast of Phuket, about 20 kilometres from Phuket City, Kata Beach is one of the most picturesque beaches on the island. Although the beach was cleared of all sunbeds and umbrellas in 2014, returning it to its natural beauty, plenty of shaded areas can be found on this tree-lined beach. With the crystal clear waters of the Andaman Sea, flanked by scenic hills and overlooking the tiny island of Koh Pu (Crab Island) - Kata epitomizes a paradise beach.

The low-rise buildings of the Club Med Resort stretch for most of Kata beach’s 1.5km length - they are separated by a road and mostly hidden from view from the beach. The parallel road running behind Club Med has a host of restaurants, shops, bars, massage shops, hotels and apartments for rent. Kata is much smaller than its neighboring Karon and Patong and thus has a more village-type feel to it.

The optimum time to visit Kata Beach is during the high season from November through to April when the sea is tranquil and warm – the perfect beach for families.

Jet-Skis, paragliding and long-tail boats are all available on Kata Beach and there are some excellent spots for snorkeling and even scuba diving. Surfing is very popular in Kata with regular competitions being held here, and at the southern end there is the Surf House that offers simulated waves for learning to surf when the sea is calm. In December, Kata Beach hosts the renowned Phuket King’s Cup Regatta that attracts hundreds of magnificent yachts from around the world to compete in some fierce racing.

There are several restaurants at the southern end of Kata Beach to relax with a cocktail and enjoy the spectacular sunset view over the sea - not to be missed!
